About Nissan Cars

Established in 2005 Nissan Motor India Private Limited (NMIPL) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nissan Motor Company of Japan. In 1999, Nissan was facing severe financial difficulties due to which it allied with Renault.

The first ever Nissan car in India was the X-Trail, which was brought in as a CBU. However, the X-Trail failed to take off as a successful model due to Nissan’s unfamiliarity with the Indian car buyers. The same was the case with the other Nissan car models like the 370Z and the Teana. The former was launched in 2010 and the latter in 2011.

Falling back to its global alliance partner Renault, NMIPL and Renault signed a MoU with the Government of Tamil Nadu. It happened in 2008, to set up a manufacturing plant near Chennai which was officially inaugurated in March 2010.

Post this restructuring, the Nissan Micra became the first official offering from Nissan India, launched in 2010. In 2016, Nissan wanted to expand its product portfolio by tapping into the rising demand for supercars in the country. As a result, it launched its global icon, the GT-R, in India.
