We have known for a while that MG Motor India’s second product for India is the ZS EV. The car has finally made its debut in India and is expected to be launched some time in January 2020.

The ZS EV is based on MG Motor’s ZS sold in the international market. In India, however, the Chinese brand will only bring in the electric vehicle. The ZS EV gets its power from a 44.5kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack that pushes out 143bhp and 353Nm. MG Motor claims that it will be quite practical considering its driving range of 340km on a single full charge. The ZS EV’s battery pack is IP-67 certified, which means, it is water resistant up to 1 metre. At the official unveiling event, we even got a glimpse of how the ZS EV can tackle water-logged roads without a worry.

Aside from driving range, one of the biggest talking points for EVs is the charge time. MG claims that the 50kW DC fast charger of the ZS EV can charge it from 0 to 80 percent in just 50 minutes. These fast chargers will be setup at MG dealerships and service stations but not at customers’ homes/offices. MG will provide customers with a 7.4 kW AC charger as standard with the car and it takes roughly 6-7 hours for a full charge.

The ZS EV will also be a connected car and will have an updated version of the Hector’s infotainment system. It will not only come with an embedded sim card for internet connectivity but also make use of Wifi and hotspot. The refreshed infotainment system also gets a new interface.

The MG ZS EV will be launched in January 2020. Expected to be priced around Rs 22 lakh, it will compete against the Hyundai Kona. The ZS EV will be produced at the company’s Halol plant in Gujarat. It will only be sold in 5 cities to start with – Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Delhi-NCR.
