Nissan has pulled the plug on the ageing Micra and Sunny as the Indian automotive industry has moved onto BS6 emissions regulations.

Nissan India has taken off the listings for the Micra Active and Micra hatchbacks, as well as the Sunny mid-size sedan from the company website. The company has decided not to upgrade the existing cars to meet BS6 emissions regulations, possibly due to their limited sales figures owing to both these models getting long in the tooth. The fourth-generation Micra was on sale for a decade internationally as the car hit markets way back in 2010. The Sunny meanwhile was a sedan derivate of the Micra, but it was very cleverly engineered by Nissan to ensure it built on the spacious Micra cabin very well by offering acres of legroom and a cavernous boot.

Both the Micra and Sunny were not just spacious and practical, but also extremely reliable cars. However, despite efforts by Nissan to modernise them over the years with more features and a touchscreen infotainment system, customers preferred more modern cars over the trusty Japanese steeds.

After continuing with very limited sales numbers until March 2020, Nissan has finally decided to pull the plug on these cars. Prices for the Nissan Micra Active ranged between Rs. 5.25 lakh to Rs. 6 lakh while the more upmarket Micra retailed between Rs. 6.63 lakh to Rs. 8.13 lakh, ex-showroom. Prices for the Sunny started at Rs. 7.07 lakh and went on to Rs. 9.94 lakh, ex-showroom.

As of now, the Nissan India company website, only lists two cars, the BS6 spec Kicks which is slated for launch soon and the GT-R supercar.

Moving away from the hatchback and sedan space, Nissan India is now focussing on the SUV space by offering a new engine and transmission option for the upcoming kicks. The company is also gearing up to enter the compact SUV space with an all-new offering. This upcoming Nissan compact SUV is rumoured to be engineered very frugally and likely to be brimmed with equipment so as to be able to undercut its core rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Hyundai Venue on the pricing front.
