The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has decided to lower the expressway's top speed limitation from 100km/h to 75km/h to address the foggy conditions during the winter season. The expressway's top speed limit is 80km/h for heavy vehicles and 100km/h for light vehicles under normal conditions. However, due to safety concerns raised by winter fog, these speed limits have been temporarily reduced to 75km/h for light vehicles and 60km/h for heavy vehicles. It should be noted that the revised speed limit limitation will be in force until February 15. In addition, overspeeding on the Yamuna Expressway during this time will result in a hefty penalty. Let's look at some of the other aspects of this preventive action.

In winter, the 165-kilometre-long expressway experiences a peak in accidents. According to market data, this route had approximately 341 registered accidents between January and October of 2023. As a result, the speed restriction for cars on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway has been increased to prevent and reduce such life-threatening road incidents caused by poor visibility on the highways during the winter season. The penalty for exceeding the speed limit is Rs 2,000. According to industry reports, the authority believes that driving will become slightly safer with the reduction in the speed limit.

Yamuna Expressway Speed Limit Decreased: Additional Safety Steps

Based on market reports, YEIDA has requested Jaypee Infratech to install warning signs to inform travellers regarding traffic laws and weather conditions. It has also asked JIL to provide flyers to commuters at every toll plaza explaining regulations, safety advice, and how adhering to the law can ensure one's safety. In addition, the operator also ought to notify drivers about road conditions and safety guidelines over the radio and through announcements at toll booths.

To enhance driver alertness, they are also requested to offer hot tea and ensure the activation of fog lights before entering the expressway. Moreover, installing fog lights and higher-quality reflective tape at entry and exit locations has also been suggested. The majority of the tapes that are now placed on the route have minimal reflection, which makes it difficult to see in the dark. The official announcement of these safety measures has not yet been made; however, these safety measures are expected to be implemented shortly.
