When you look at the design language of the Lexus lineup in India, the one product that stands out is the RX SUV. It’s the one truly unique ‘Lexus’ vehicle in this lineup – the other two products are derivatives of Toyota products. As a result, the RX’s design is something that can’t be ignored. Led by that massive front spindle grille, finished in bright chrome, along with sharp lines and cutoffs, the RX is a very unique looking product and draws a lot of attention. It would be fair to say that it looks like no other SUV out there.

Interestingly, the RX is only offered as a Hybrid in India – with the sole powerplant of choice being a 3.5-litre V6 Atkinson cycle engine, paired with a hybrid powertrain consisting of two electric motors. As a result, the engine produces a meaty combined figure of 308bhp and ample torque. The torque and power figures mean that the RX takes off rather quickly and has good midrange. However, the RX’s Achilles heel lies in its mass. Weighing over 2.1 tons, the RX has a lot of metal to move for an SUV of its size. As a result, the RX’s on-track performance and dynamics suffer – and hence the lap time isn’t as impressive as it could be.

Lexus RX 450h scoreOn the road, however, the RX is very nice to drive – with the suspension handling our roads quite adeptly. Of course, the fantastic quality and finishing on the interiors – like all other Lexus vehicles – means that the interior is a superb place to spend time in. It’s luxurious, the sound system is fantastic, and this is a perfect car to be stuck in traffic with after a long and tiring day. This is not a driver’s car per se, but as a car to tackle the urban jungle with there are very few cars that are more pleasing than the RX.

But, despite how truly capable this product really is, the RX loses out on the value-for-money front. So, this is a car that you vote for with your heart. Sure, being a hybrid, it also appeals to your environmental consciousness, but the price that you pay to save the environment in this case may be a deal breaker. If cost is no option – between its looks and the comfort it offers – the RX will serve you very well indeed.
