Jeep drops the veil on the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, which it claims is "the quickest and most powerful SUV ever."

What you see in the pictures here is essentially a muscle car that has donned the outfit of an SUV. It’s called the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and packs quite some punch - so much so that its maker claims it to be the most powerful and quickest SUV ever!

The main talking point here is the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk’s insanely powerful engine. It’s a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 petrol that pumps out a monstrous 707bhp and 874Nm of torque. And we need not remind you that this is the same powertrain that propels the Hellcat derivatives of the Charger and Challenger.

To deal with the extra firepower, the eight-speed gearbox has been uprated while the drive continues to go to all four wheels. So, what about performance? Jeep claims the Trackhawk will catapult from naught to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds – which means it’s actually the quickest of fossil fueled SUVs in the world. With a top speed of 290km/h, it isn’t the world’s fastest high-riding vehicle though. That record is held by the Bentley Bentayga W12, which can do 301km/h.

In order to bring the Trackhawk to a halt from the kind of ludicrous speeds it can do, the braking package has been improved, too. It features uprated Brembo brakes that bring it from 100km/h to zero in 3.6 seconds or in 36 metres of distance.

In terms of design, the Trackhawk gets a revised front end and differently designed 20-inch titanium colour alloys that come shod with 295/45Z-R20 section Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyres among other bits. The Pirelli P Zeros are optional for those who want more adhesion with the road. Inside, there’s a new Trackhawk-themed 8.4-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. You do also get active noise cancellation technology, a leather-stitched instrument panel, Nappa leather seats with ‘Trackhawk’ badging, heated front and rear seats, etc.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk will make its global debut at the 2017 New York Motor Show, which kicks off in a day’s time.
