BMW's brand new and swanky coupe offerings  the 8 Series Gran Coupe and M8 Coupe are all set to be launched in India.

Come May 8th, BMW will launch the 8 Series Grand Coupe and M8 in India. Due to the nationwide lockdown, the launch of the new models will take place online.

The new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe had already made its appearance on BMW India’s website a couple of weeks ago, so it was only a matter of time before the company launched it formally. However, the surprise here is the launch of the high-performance derivative of the car, the M8, which will also go on sale alongside the regular version.

The 8 Series went on sale in global markets in 2019, and the grand tourer is offered in three body styles – Coupe, Convertible and four-door Coupe (Gran Coupe). For the Indian market, BMW is bringing the four-door Gran Coupe as well as the two-door M8 Coupe.

The 8 Series Grand Coupe version is expected to be offered in the 840i and 840d xDrive trims. The former features a 3.0-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo petrol engine that develops 335bhp and 500Nm of torque, while the latter is also powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine that is rated at 315bhp and develops 680Nm of torque. Both the engines are paired with an eight-speed torque converter (automatic). However, the 840i  has rear-wheel drive and the 840d xDrive comes with all-wheel drive.

The M8 Coupe, on the other hand, features a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine that churns out 592bhp and 750Nm. This engine is also paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and has all-wheel drive.

The BMW 8 Series Grand Coupe is expected to be priced at around Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom), and it’ll compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLS in the market. The M8 Coupe is expected to be priced closer to the Rs 2 crore mark, as it is more stylish and performance-oriented. The M8 will compete against the likes of Porsche Panamera Turbo and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door Coupe.
