Rivian, the American EV manufacturer, has taken the wraps off its new R2 midsize SUV, which will hit the US market in 2026. While the bookings for the model are open at $100, the deliveries are expected to begin in the first half of 2026. The Rivian R2 is the firm's new entry-spec model starting at $45,000.

Smaller than the company's flagship R1 vehicles, the five-seater R2 measures 4,714mm in length, 2,143mm in width (with mirrors), and 1,699mm in height. Meanwhile, the wheelbase and ground clearance stand at 2,936mm and 249mm, respectively. The new Rivian R2 is 'optimised for big adventures and everyday use'. It has a boxy design with the company's lighting signature both at the front and rear. With the first- and second-row seats folding flat and more storage capacity, there is room for everyone and their equipment. Interior bits also include a 15.6-inch infotainment display in the centre, a smaller screen for the driver, and pop-out rear quarter windows. A compact Travel Kitchen and a Rivian Treehouse are among the lifestyle features offered as optional extras.

What is smaller than the R2 is the R3, which sits on the same midsize vehicle platform as the former. The R3's wheelbase is 135mm shorter than that of the R2. The Rivian R3 sports sleek body panels, a small frunk, flush door handles, a short rear overhang, a full-width taillight, and a Flipper Glass that can open independently.

Even smaller than the regular R3 is its sporty variant, dubbed the R3X, which came as a bit of a surprise. Unveiled along with the R3, the Rivian R3X appears more like a rally car. Rivian says the R3X offers more dynamic abilities both on and off the road. While not much is known about the performance-oriented R3X, the firm has confirmed a tri-motor powertrain – the same used by the Tesla Model S Plaid. It also boasts of rally-style wheels and a 'rugged playful' interior.

Rivian R2, R3: Powertrain, Charging Capabilities

In terms of powertrain, the Rivian R2 and R3 come with single, dual, and tri-motor configurations, along with two different battery packs claimed to offer improved energy density. The single-motor drivetrain powers the rear wheels, while the all-wheel-drive system can be had with dual- or tri-motors.

The R2 can sprint from 0 to 100km/h in under three seconds (claimed), while the larger battery pack is said to offer over 483km range on a single charge. Regardless of the battery size, the R2 and R3 can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in less than 30 minutes.

Rivian R2, R3: Price

Rivian estimates the pricing of the Tesla Model Y-rivalling R2 to start from $45,000. As for the smaller R3, Rivian has yet to disclose the price range. However, it does say that it will be more affordable than the R2.

"Our design and engineering teams are extremely focused on driving innovation into not only the product features but also our approach to manufacturing to achieve dramatically lower costs. R2 provides buyers starting in the $45,000 price range with a much-needed choice with a thoroughly developed technology platform that is bursting with personality. I can’t wait to get these to customers," said RJ Scaringe, Rivian Founder and CEO.
