For all those who thought that there was a slump in the Commercial Vehicles sector, well here’s some good news. Tata Motors’ Jamshedpur plant today rolled out its 2 millionth truck from its manufacturing facility. The plant that manufactures Tata Motors’ entire range of medium and heavy commercial vehicles, including vehicles for defence applications, has evolved ten folds from when it was first set up in 1945 to manufacture steam locomotives.

It was only in 1954 that Tata’s started with commercial vehicle production at this plant and now close to 60 years later, the 2-millionth truck has rolled out from this plant. The plant houses a design and engineering centre which is responsible for the 697/497 turbo charged engines. This centre boasts of a capacity of supplying up to 200 engines on a daily basis.

While there is a dedicated line for other vehicles which meet the requirement of the defence sectors, the Truck factory’s main assembly line rolls out one truck every 5 minutes. Tata Motors’ Jamshedpur plant, as Mr. Karl Slym, Managing Director has rightly put, “is capable of producing technologically rich and high performing civilian and defence products, catering to customers across the world.” No wonder its time for some celebrations.
