Volkswagen India has launched the Golf GTI at an ex-showroom price of Rs 53 lakh, making it the brand’s costliest offering in the Indian market to date. This sporty hatchback is brought in as a Completely Built-Up (CBU) import. Due to overwhelming demand, pre-bookings for the Golf GTI Mk 8.5 were closed soon after the initial allocation sold out. The booking process, which started on May 5, involved a distinctive online quiz that buyers needed to pass by scoring at least 4 out of 5, with only one attempt allowed per mobile number. With the first 150 units already taken, Volkswagen is preparing to bring in an additional 100 cars to keep up with the rising interest. Here's all you need to know about the new member of the VW India family.
Volkswagen has given the Golf GTI a fresh, performance-focused identity with a sharper design language. The front end now features a distinctive twin-chamber LED headlight setup, flanked by pixel-style fog lamps shaped in an ‘X’ pattern. Enhancing its bold appearance are an illuminated VW emblem and honeycomb textures on the bumper. While its dimensions remain familiar, new aerodynamic elements subtly refine the car’s sporty character.

The GTI rides on 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, and its lowered stance accentuates its dynamic presence. At the rear, visual updates such as slimmer LED tail lamps, a cleaner diffuser, and dual exhaust tips give the hatchback a more aggressive finish. Signature red GTI badges on the grille, tailgate, and fenders help it stand apart from standard Golf variants sold abroad.
Underneath, the car is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that pushes out 260bhp of maximum power and 370Nm of peak torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Volkswagen claims a 0–100km/h time of 5.9 seconds, with top speed capped at 250km/h.
The GTI also features dynamic enhancements over the regular model, including uprated brakes, a more rigid suspension setup, sharper steering, and an electronic front differential for improved grip during fast cornering.
Step inside, and the GTI’s cabin reveals a clear performance-oriented character fused with everyday comfort. The interior adopts a deep black theme, contrasted by vivid red accents that inject a sporty undertone. Paying tribute to its legacy, the front sport seats come wrapped in classic plaid (Tartan) fabric and feature embossed GTI logos on the backrests.
Tech-wise, the dashboard is anchored by a large 12.9-inch touchscreen handling infotainment, navigation, and vehicle settings. Complementing this is a 10.25-inch digital driver display, delivering crisp and customisable drive data. The flat-bottomed steering wheel, designed for a firmer grip, adds to the car’s dynamic focus. Premium touches include wireless charging, a panoramic glass roof, multi-zone automatic climate control, and seamless wireless integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Enhancing in-car interaction is a ChatGPT-based voice assistant, allowing users to issue natural-language commands for a more fluid, intuitive driving experience.
Volkswagen has outfitted the Golf GTI with a comprehensive set of safety features aimed at enhancing both protection and driver convenience. This includes a rearview camera, seven airbags, and sensors at the front and rear for parking assistance. Adding to this is an advanced driver assistance suite that brings semi-autonomous capabilities like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, designed to ease long drives and boost overall safety.
