Yamaha has registered a patent for an electric motocross, and images of the same have appeared online. The newly filed patent concentrates on developing a transmission that can more effectively meet the requirements of motocross riding competition through greater torque and traction. Furthermore, the patent suggests that the upcoming bike may feature a carbon fibre monocoque chassis to store the battery, similar to the TY-E. The TY-E trial bike, according to Yamaha, offered useful insights, especially in dealing with the issues of generating rapid torque for optimal performance. Here's all you need to know about the new patent filed by Yamaha.

Yamaha Electric Motocross Design Patent: Key Highlights

While testing the TY-E, Yamaha found that even though electric motors are great at generating maximum torque at very low speeds, the standard direct drive between the motor and rear wheel was not sufficient for trial riding. Hence, the manufacturer fixed the problem by integrating a flywheel and traditional clutch into the setup, which improved low-speed balance and provided the rider with instant power when releasing the clutch.

When it comes to the motocross bike, this approach is ineffective since it increases the powertrain's size and weight. This version needed instant torque and better throttle responsiveness than a trial bike. As a result, the manufacturer has developed a brand-new solution that incorporates a torsion damper in the gearbox. The damper consists of two coaxially positioned rotors that are spring-connected. These springs function as energy reservoirs that compress and release energy in response to throttle inputs, offering a brief burst of additional power at the rear wheel when required. Compared to the TY-E's flywheel configuration, the technology is lighter and more compact yet offers the same benefits.

The torsion damper designed specifically for motocross bikes demonstrates an immense potential in improving performance at motocross competitions. Regarding the battery and characteristics of the bike, Yamaha and the patent illustrations have not disclosed anything as of now. In the months to come, when the bike's prototype is anticipated to be globally unveiled, further information on this subject may become available. Yamaha does not provide dirt bikes for sale in India. Whether the Electric Motocross will make its way here is something only time will tell.
