The Hyundai IONIQ 5 did not just win the 2022 World Car of the Year title – it also took home the 2022 World Electric Vehicle of the Year and the 2022 World Car Design of the Year awards!

The 2022 World Car Finals concluded with the declaration of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 EV as the 2022 World Car of the Year live at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). For this award, the IONIQ 5 was up against the Ford Mustang Mach-E and its platform sibling, the Kia EV6.

The Hyundai EV, apart from sealing the World Car win for the Korean giant, also made history by clinching the 2022 World Electric Car and 2022 World Car Design awards, making it a triple win for Hyundai. In fact, this year, it's a quadruple World Car Awards win for Hyundai, considering that Hyundai's Design Chief Luc Donckerwolke is the 2022 World Car Person of the Year!

In the World Electric Car category, the IONIQ 5 pipped the Audi e-tron GT and the Mercedes-Benz EQS for the crown, while in the World Car Design category, the IONIQ 5 emerged on top in a top-three battle with the e-tron GT and the EV6.

Sharing his thoughts on this landmark achievement, Jaehoon Chang (President & CEO – Hyundai Motor Company) said, 'We are truly honoured to receive these prestigious awards, which recognize the talent and hard work of all our people and business partners at Hyundai Motor Company. Our vision is to enable Progress for Humanity, and this endorsement of our approach will serve to embolden our commitment to make this vision a reality.'

As for the remaining three awards, the 2022 World Luxury Car title went to the Mercedes-Benz EQS, and the Audi e-tron GT was declared the 2022 World Performance Car of the Year. The Toyota Yaris Cross (interestingly, the only non-EV award winner this year) was chosen as the 2022 World Urban Car of the Year. It's worth mentioning that the Volkswagen Taigun was the first-ever Made-in-India vehicle competing in the World Car Awards for the World Urban Car crown and it even made it to the top three finalists in the category.
