Maruti Suzuki recently announced that it sold a total of 172,535 units in January 2023 – a nearly 12 per cent month-on-month (MoM) increase over the 1,54,379 units sold in January last year. Domestic sales accounted for 151,367 units of the total 1.73 lakh cars sold by Maruti Suzuki, while sales to other OEMs accounted for 3,775 units. The remaining 17,393 units were exported to other markets. The company also claimed that the lack of electronic components had only a minor impact on vehicle production, primarily of domestic models. Despite customer preferences shifting towards SUVs, hatchbacks posted positive YoY growth in January 2023. Hyundai's Tarun Garg previously stated that while the hatchback segment is shrinking, it is still an important segment for India, as indicated by sales in January 2023. Here are the top five best-selling hatchbacks in India, as well as their sales figures and year-on-year growth for the month of January.

Tata Tiago

In January 2023, the Tata Tiago, the automaker's entry-level model, was the fourth best-selling hatchback. By selling 9,032 units of the Tiago in January 2023, Tata Motors achieved a significant YoY growth of 74 per cent, for it sold only 5,195 units of the car in January last year. Since it’s offered with electric, gasoline, and CNG powertrain options, the Tata Tiago hatchback appeals to a diverse range of customers. The Tiago EV is also the most budget-friendly EV in India right now, and it comes with two battery packs, making it an ideal city hatchback.
