Despite a decline in overall hatchback sales over the past few years, some models have continued to shine on the domestic market. Further, it is true that SUVs have been ruling the road, but interestingly hatchbacks continue to hold the top spots on the list of the best-selling vehicles for March 2023. Hatchbacks occupy three of the top five spots, with the Vitara Brezza and the Nexon taking the remaining two spots on the list. Even in March, the popular Maruti Suzuki Swift, a hatchback, outsold models like the Maruti Suzuki WagonR and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno in terms of sales in India. Here's a closer look at the top 3 best-selling hatchbacks in the Indian market for March 2023.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

For March 2023, the best-selling car and hatchback are both Maruti Suzuki Swift. The car has seen year-over-year growth of 29 per cent with sales of 17,559 units in March 2023 and 13,623 units in March 2022. Since its 2005 launch, the Swift has sold millions of units in India.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift's 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine produces 89bhp and 113Nm of peak torque. This engine can also be paired with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT transmission. The Maruti Suzuki Swift includes a variety of features such as idle engine start/stop, electronic stability control (ESC), hill start assist, projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, fog lamps, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, analogue instrument cluster with colour MID, cruise control, auto-folding ORVM, auto temperature control, a rearview camera with parking sensors, dual airbags, ABS, EBD, and connected car features via Suzuki Connect.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

The tall boy from Maruti Suzuki keeps bringing in steady sales for the Japanese manufacturer month after month. Maruti Suzuki had the fourth-highest monthly sales in February 2023 with 16,889 units sold. The WagonR rose to the second spot on the list of the top 10 selling vehicles in March 2023. The WagonR did, however, sell more units, or 16,889 units, in February than in March 2023.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

After selling 16,168 units in March 2023, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno was the third most popular hatchback last month. Upon raking in 14,524 units during the same period last year, it has reported an increase of 11 per cent year over year (YoY). Due to the Baleno's success, the automaker now offers the Fronx, an SUV version of the same vehicle.

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is powered by a 1.2-Litre 4-cylinder Dualjet K12N petrol engine, capable of producing a maximum power output of 90bhp. For transmission, the Baleno uses either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. Moreover, it gets 14-inch disc brakes at the front axle, along with a revised suspension system. The new Baleno has a 9.0-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen infotainment system, an Arkamys surround sound system, a 360-degree camera, automatic climate control, keyless entry and go, an auto-dimming IRVM, Suzuki Connect connected car technology, and support for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and voice commands.

It is available in four versions – Sigma, Delta, Zeta, and Alpha – and has six colour options: Opulent Red, Grandeur Grey, Luxe Beige, Pearl Arctic White, Nexa Blue, and Splendid Silver. In India, the hatchback competes with vehicles like the Tata Altroz, the Hyundai i20, the Toyota Glanza, and the Honda Jazz.
