Best-selling SUVs in January 2023: Nexon, Creta, Brezza and More

The SUV segment currently dominates the passenger vehicle (PV) market. The SUVs in particular attracted significant sales volumes in January as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) started 2023 on an overall positive note. The SUV market is definitely the most profitable one for automakers. Due to the increasing popularity of this particular segment, sport utility vehicles have lately seen a boost in sales. And every now and then, we have new SUVs coming to the market. An ideal SUV is built to handle challenging terrain and is the go-to vehicle for off-roading, but in India, SUVs have evolved into high-end cars with high-set bodies. From small SUVs to large full-size three-row SUVs, the Indian market is full of various SUV models, but only a few of them managed to establish themselves as segment leaders. Four out of the top ten selling vehicles in India in January 2023 were SUVs. Here are the top 10 best-selling SUVs in India for the month of January. The list includes several popular models like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Creta, Maruti and Suzuki Brezza.

Tata Nexon

The Tata Nexon continues to dominate the SUV market. The Nexon, which is offered in ICE and EV versions, was India's best-selling vehicle in the segment in January. Tata Motors sold 15,567 units of the SUV in comparison to 13,816 units in the same month last year. The number of units sold has increased significantly from the 12,053 units sold in December 2022.

Hyundai Creta

The Creta, Hyundai India's best-selling compact SUV, posted its highest monthly sales ever in January 2023. The Hyundai Creta sold 15,037 units for the Korean automaker last month, which also happens to be the compact SUV's best-ever monthly sales figures since its debut in 2015. In comparison to the 10,205 units sold in December and the 9,869 units sold in January last year, its sales improved considerably in January this year. Regarding the company's overall sales figures, in January 2023, Hyundai India sold a total of 50,106 units, of which 27,532 were SUVs, including the Tucson, Creta, Venue, Alcazar, and Kona Electric.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza

With 14,359 units sold in January 2023, Maruti Suzuki's best-selling vehicle, the Brezza, came in a close third. It was modified last year with fresh styling elements. A total of 35,353 utility vehicles, including the XL6 and Grand Vitara, were sold by Maruti Suzuki in January 2023, marking a decrease of 33 per cent. At the same time, the company sold 11,709 units of the Eeco van, marking an increase of 11 per cent. The Super Carry LCV was also sold by Maruti Suzuki for a total of 4,019 units, while 3,775 units were sold to other OEMs (Toyota).

.Tata Punch

The Tata Punch, the firm's latest SUV model, registered a sales figure of 12,006 units in the month of January 2023, making it the company's most successful model. The Tata Punch, which debuted on the market in 2021 and is offered in petrol and CNG versions, is the smallest SUV in the company's product line-up. In total, Tata Motors sold 81,069 vehicles in January 2023 compared to 76,210 units in January 2022, marking an increase of 6.3 per cent.

Hyundai Venue

With 10,738 units sold in January 2023, the Hyundai Venue is the third sub-compact SUV on our list. The Hyundai Venue also underwent a cosmetic update last year, just like the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, without undergoing any changes in terms of powertrain. The Hyundai Venue is available with a variety of manual and automatic transmissions and two gasoline and one diesel engine options.

Kia Seltos

Following the Hyundai Creta, the Kia Seltos enters the list at number six with 10,470 units sold in January 2023. The compact SUV saw a 9 per cent decline, with 11,483 units sold in the same period last year. The company sold a total of 28,634 units in January 2023, which marks an increase of 48 per cent from 19,319 units in the corresponding month of the previous year. The Kia Seltos will receive an update later this month, which will include new styling cues on the exterior, additional features inside, and a slightly premium cabin.

Kia Sonet

The Kia Sonet is the fourth sub-compact SUV on our list, with the company selling 9,261 units in January 2023, which is an increase of 34 per cent over the 6,904 units sold in the same period last year. In addition, within its first four years of operations, Kia India exceeded the 6.5 lakh unit domestic sales milestone, making it the country's fastest-growing automaker to do so.

Mahindra Scorpio-N

The company sold 8,715 units of the Mahindra's Scorpio (Scorpio-N and Classic combined) in the last month, which is an increase of 188 per cent from 3,026 units (previous-gen Scorpio) during the same month last year. Comparatively, Mahindra sold 33,040 passenger vehicles in January 2023 – an increase of 65 per cent over the 19,964 units sold in the same month last year. The company sold 125 units of cars and vans (including EVs) last month, registering an increase of 8 per cent, and 32,915 utility vehicles (SUVs and MPVs), marking an increase of 66 per cent.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

With 8,662 units sold, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is the latest compact SUV to join our list of best-selling SUVs for January 2023. In addition to petrol and hybrid versions, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara’s CNG variants were recently introduced. It competes in the compact SUV market with the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, and Skoda Kushaq and is offered in seven exterior colour schemes.

Mahindra XUV700

The Mahindra XUV700, which sold 5,787 units in January 2023, comes in last on our list. The company recalled over 19,000 units of the XUV700 and the Scorpio-N SUVs in November last year to assess the rubber bellow inside bell housing on the manual transmission variants of the SUVs. The increase in sales is a sign of positive growth for the automaker in the upcoming months.
