Made-in-India Jeep Compass all set to go on sale.

There’s no denying that the Jeep Compass is one of the most hotly anticipated vehicles of this year. Jeep has already revealed the India-spec Compass to the masses and the only thing that’s left to do now is to put a price tag on it. Come July 31, Fiat-Chrysler India will finally do that, too.

The Compass is going to be the firm’s first made-in-India SUV, so expectations, as a result, are of course high with this one. From what we can tell – based on our first drive review that is – the Jeep Compass has got almost all of the bases covered and comes across as a really strong package. Will it fly off the showroom shelves? Well, only time will tell but, at the moment, Jeep has got over a thousand bookings for the vehicle already. Overwhelming, indeed.

You see, what makes the Compass a really tempting prospect is that it comes with a certain heritage and pedigree and it’s been packaged really well. Not only does it look appealing from the outside, even on the inside it has features aplenty. Among some of the features, the Compass gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, leather upholstery, auto projector headlamps with DRLs, etc. The safety net will include 6 airbags, ABS and ESP.

Engine options on the India-spec Compass will include a 2.0-litre MultiJet diesel and 1.4-litre MultiAir petrol. The former is rated at 170bhp and 350Nm, and comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, whereas the latter will develop 160bhp and 250Nm of torque and will be available with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual clutch automatic. Both 2WD and 4WD configurations will be available. Deliveries of the diesel version will begin first, whereas the petrol models will be delivered only after four to six weeks of launch.

The Jeep Compass is expected to be priced between Rs 18 lakh and Rs 22 lakh in India. Having said that, Jeep may surprise us with its pricing since this is the firm’s make-or-break product. The Jeep Compass will mainly compete with the Hyundai Tucson.
