Mercedes-Benz has revealed the A-Class L sedan at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show. This Chinese-spec car previews the global A-Class sedan, which will be identical, albeit shorter.

However, the A-Class sedan is not to be confused with the CLA, as the former is not replacing the latter. Both these cars will coexist in the market, where the A sedan will be positioned as a more practical alternative to the coupe-like CLA.

This long wheelbase A-Class sedan measures 4,609mm in length, 1,796mm in width and 1,460mm in height. Its wheelbase is 60mm longer than that of the 2018 Mercedes A-Class hatchback. The boot space of the car stands at 420 litres.

Its aesthetics are heavily inspired by the Mercedes Concept A Sedan, which was showcased last year. As in the hatchback model, the interior of the sedan is completely new, with many segment firsts. Standout features of the cabin include turbine-look air vents and the completely free-standing widescreen display.

Also on board is the MBUX multimedia system with artificial intelligence. Mercedes-Benz is the world's first automotive manufacturer to provide navigation display featuring augmented reality technology in the Chinese market.

At the market launch, the A-Class L Sedan will be available in China with a 4-cylinder petrol engine having displacement of 1.33-litre, producing either 135bhp or 160bhp. Following latter will be a 2-litre petrol engine with 187bhp. A 7-speed dual clutch transmission will come standard with both engines.

Since the long wheelbase model is now revealed, it won't take too long for the standard A-Class sedan to go official. We expect Mercedes-Benz to launch the standard A-Class sedan in India, as it would be a formidable rival to the Audi A3.
