Mercedes-Benz showcased this SLS AMG Electric Drive Coupe recently and we knew that when they make a car as powerful as this, they will put it to the test. Where else would you take a fast and guilt free car? The Nurburgring, ofcourse.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive lapped Germany’s Nurburgring circuit in 7 minutes 56.234sec, making it the first electrically powered series production vehicle to complete the legendary circuit in under eight minutes.

This makes the SLS AMG Electric Drive, the world’s most powerful all-electric vehicle. With 751 bhp  and 1000Nm torques on offer, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive, covered the 20.8km Nurburgring circuit in under 8 minutes. Four electric motors, liquid-cooled 60kWh lithium-ion battery and a permanent all-wheel-drive system all worked in sync to power this car across the finish line.

Mercedes-Benz says that the SLS AMG Electric Drive accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

The SLS AMG Electric Drive’s time is 45 seconds slower than the current combustion-engined production car record of 7:11.57 set by the V8 petrol-powered Gumpert Apollo Sport in 2009 but is more than 13 seconds faster than the world record 8:09.099 time set by the all-electric Audi R8 e-tron in July 2012. So, has Audi told its engineers to work overtime now? We’ll have to wait and watch.
