The Indian car industry witnessed a substantial rise in sales in May 2024, with several models registering remarkable year-over-year growth. Maruti Suzuki topped the sales charts, with three cars on the list of top 5 best-sellers. It also maintained its position as the top-selling car brand in India, selling over 1.44 lakh units last month. Let's explore in-depth the top five cars that sold in India in May 2024.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

The Swift was the best-selling car in May 2024 in India. It sold 19,393 units, representing a YoY increase of 11.80%. The new hatch went on sale in India at a starting price of Rs 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It is powered by the brand-new Z-series 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine, which develops 80bhp at 5,700rpm and 112Nm of torque at 4,300rpm, down by 9bhp and 1Nm from the previous K-series unit. In terms of mileage, the manual variant delivers 24.8km/l, while the automatic version offers 25.75km/l.

The Punch SUV dropped from first to second position in May 2024. Tata Motors sold 18,949 Punch (EV included) units in India last month, a significant rise of 70.34% over 11,124 units sold the previous year. The starting price of the Tata Punch EV is Rs 10.99 lakh, while the ICE model is priced at Rs 6.13 lakh. These prices are ex-showroom. The latter is equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, while the former has two battery pack versions (25kWh and 35kWh).

Maruti Suzuki Dzire

With 16,061 units sold, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire was the third best-selling vehicle in May 2024. It showed a 41.94% year-over-year rise over the last year's 11,315 units. The sedan costs between Rs 6.57 lakh to Rs 9.39 lakh. It features a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. In addition, the car offers a CNG option.

In May, the Hyundai Creta sold 14,662 units, representing a 1.47% growth over the previous year's 14,449 units. The 5-seat SUV has three powertrain options: 1.5-litre naturally aspirated (NA) petrol, 1.5-litre diesel, and a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol. The model is available in seven different variants: E, EX, S, S(O), SX, SX Tech, and SX(O). It is priced between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 20.15 lakh (both ex-showroom).

Despite a small decline in year-on-year sales, the Maruti WagonR remained among the top five best-selling cars, selling 14,492 units. The hatchback is priced between Rs 5.54 lakh and Rs 7.38 lakh (ex-showroom). It is available with two petrol options: a 1-litre unit (66bhp/89Nm), and a 1.2-litre unit (88.7bhp/113Nm).
