Volkswagen has redefined its performance credentials at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, with the Golf GTI Edition 50 setting a new benchmark as the fastest production model the brand has ever run on the famed 20.8 km circuit. Turning in a lap time of 7 minutes and 46.13 seconds, it beat the record previously held by the earlier Golf R. The timing of this accomplishment is fitting, marking 50 years of the Golf GTI nameplate and reinforcing its legacy as Volkswagen’s most iconic performance car. The record-setting lap at the notoriously challenging “Green Hell” was driven by professional racer Benjamin Leuchter.
Volkswagen will unveil the Golf GTI Edition 50 on June 20, during the Nurburgring 24-hour race weekend, marking five decades of the GTI nameplate. This special-edition hot hatch will be produced in limited quantities and offered in select regions, with deliveries expected to begin in 2026. Volkswagen describes the model as a return to the essence of the GTI philosophy: punchy front-wheel-drive power, razor-sharp handling, and a chassis engineered with track use in mind. While pricing has not yet been disclosed, it’s expected to sit above the standard GTI’s price bracket.
The Edition 50 recently made headlines by setting a Nurburgring lap time of 7 minutes and 46.13 seconds – the quickest ever for a production-spec Volkswagen. That figure not only beats the previous-gen Golf R (7:47.19, manual) but even tops the lap time of the non-production Volkswagen ID.R electric prototype. While a few AWD performance cars like the Honda Civic Type R remain slightly quicker (7:44.88), the Edition 50 proves that a properly sorted front-wheel-drive car can still hold its own on the world’s toughest circuit.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine tuned to deliver 296bhp of maximum power and 400Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox sending power to the front wheels.
A range of performance upgrades contributes to its Nurburgring credentials, including a motorsport-tuned suspension setup with adaptive dampers, specially designed lightweight 19-inch wheels wrapped in grippy tyres, and aerodynamic revisions to increase downforce and stability. Brake hardware has also been uprated to endure hard track use, while a performance-focused ESC setup allows more flexibility and driver input under pressure.
