Volkswagen is gearing up to launch the Golf GTI in India on May 26, marking the debut of its internationally acclaimed hot hatch in the country. Celebrated for its balance of performance and practicality, the GTI is aimed at drivers looking for a sportier, more dynamic alternative in the premium hatchback space. The vehicle will be brought in as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). Bookings opened on May 5, and the first allocation of 150 units was fully reserved within five days. Volkswagen has since suspended bookings for the Golf GTI Mk 8.5 on its official site. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in June via select dealerships. This launch signals the brand’s interest in exploring performance-focused offerings for the Indian market.
The upcoming Golf GTI maintains its familiar sporty yet understated design language. The updated front end features a signature honeycomb grille with the GTI emblem, sharper LED headlamps, and a revised, more aggressive bumper.
At the rear, minor styling changes such as slimmer tail lights and a refined diffuser contribute to a more athletic stance while staying true to the Golf’s iconic profile. The hatchback retains its compact, well-balanced proportions, now enhanced with subtle aerodynamic touches. For India, it will ride on 18-inch dual-tone, five-spoke alloy wheels that further emphasise its sporty intent.

The interior is designed with driving enthusiasts in mind, combining practicality with sporty styling. The cabin features a predominantly black theme, accented by red highlights that add a bold, energetic touch. The front bucket seats are upholstered in signature Tartan fabric, a nod to the GTI’s heritage, and come with GTI logos embossed on the backrests, blending nostalgia with modern comfort.
At the centre of the dashboard is a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system that handles media, connectivity, and various vehicle functions. A 10.25-inch digital driver display sits behind the wheel, providing clear, real-time driving data. The flat-bottom steering wheel enhances grip and complements the car’s performance-focused design. The 2025 iteration boasts 30-colour ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof, and multi-zone climate control. A notable addition is the ChatGPT-based voice assistant, which allows for more natural and responsive voice commands.
Safety is also a key focus, with seven airbags, parking sensors at both ends, ESC, and a rearview camera. Advanced driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist further improve long-distance driving safety and convenience.
Powering the GTI is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 260bhp and 370Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that drives the front wheels. It accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in a claimed 5.9 seconds, with a top speed limited to 250km/h.
