Maruti Suzuki’s new WagonR is coming our way soon. Here’s what you need to know about it . . .

Maruti Suzuki has been extremely successful in keeping its new WagonR under wraps. Usually, test car pictures or leaked images from dealerships are circulated online way before the market launch of a car. This time though, it wasn’t until very lately that clear pictures of the new car emerged on the Internet. But before speculations could build, Maruti Suzuki has come out in the open and issued a statement that the company will launch the new car on the 23rd of January, 2019.

The new WagonR for India is underpinned by Maruti Suzuki’s Heartect platform that the new Baleno, Swift, Ignis and Dzire are underpinned with. This has made the new car wider and lighter than before. The car will also have a longer wheelbase than the model it replaces and is likely to offer more boot space too.

Considering the success of previous models, Maruti Suzuki has ensured that the new car looks more modern but at the same time retains those boxy proportions by which the model is identified. While we are yet to closely examine the interior of the new car, it too has an upright dashboard like the current car but incorporates a new design along with new instruments and switchgear. The new WagonR will also benefit from Maruti Suzuki’s touchscreen infotainment system.

A big step up for the new WagonR will be the use of Suzuki’s 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, K-Series petrol engine in higher-end variants of the car. While the lower-end variants will continue to be powered by the K10B 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine. Gearbox options will include a five-speed manual across variants as well as a five-speed AMT automatic option in VXi and ZXi variants.
