The month of June was particularly exciting for the Indian passenger vehicle segment. While most manufacturers saw year-over-year growth in sales, there was a decline in month-over-month figures for many. The demand for SUVs remained strong, for six of the top ten PVs sold in June 2023 were SUVs.

Maruti Suzuki was a dominant player during the month, occupying six out of the top ten spots on the sales chart. Tata Motors and Hyundai each occupied two spots on the list. The Brezza saw a phenomenal rise of 140%, securing its position among the top 10 best-selling cars in June. The Hyundai Creta was the third most popular car in June and the best-selling SUV of the month. The Venue from Hyundai had a 12% increase and moved up to sixth place on the sales chart. So, let’s take a look at the top 5 best-selling cars in June 2023.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has consistently been a best-seller, with sales nearing 17,500 units. While its month-over-month (MoM) figure increased, its year-over-year (YoY) figure fell by 9 per cent. The Wagon R is a tallboy hatchback built on the Heartect platform, which also serves as the foundation for other Maruti Suzuki vehicles. The Wagon R has a straightforward and stylish appearance, with characteristics like sweptback halogen headlights, alloy wheels, ORVMs with turn indicators, and tall taillights. The car has a roomy, pleasant interior with enough headroom and legroom for every passenger. It also offers features like power windows, a multi-function steering wheel, and a touchscreen infotainment system.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is available with two engine choices, both of which comply with BS6 phase-2 emission norms. The first is a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder K-Series petrol base engine, which offers 89Nm of peak torque and 65bhp of maximum power. The CNG version of the 1.0-litre K-Series engine generates 55bhp and 82Nm of torque. The other engine is a more powerful 1.2-litre 4-cylinder K-Series petrol engine, which is offered in high-end models. This engine produces 88bhp and 113Nm of torque. For transmission, you can choose between an AMT and a 5-Speed manual gearbox.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Continuing its streak, the Maruti Suzuki Swift secured the second position once again, with a total sales figure of approximately 16,000 units. The Swift was introduced to the Indian market in 2005 as a four-cylinder petrol vehicle. It quickly gained popularity among customers, leading to the launch of its second-generation model in 2011.

In 2018, Maruti Suzuki unveiled the third-generation Swift, which offered a range of contemporary features like diamond-cut alloy wheels, LED DRLs, and LED headlights.

The high-end models also get cruise control, electrically-adjustable ORVMs, auto air conditioning, and Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility. The Maruti Suzuki Swift is powered by a 1.2-litre Dual-Jet petrol engine, with torque and power figures of 113Nm and 86bhp, respectively. The engine is connected to a five-speed manual/AMT gearbox.

Hyundai Creta

Hyundai Creta 2

The Hyundai Creta secured the third position on the sales chart, making it the best-selling SUV of June 2023. With around 14,450 sold units, it surpassed the sales of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The Hyundai Creta starts at Rs 10.87 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. Seven distinct versions of the mid-size SUV are available: E, EX, S, S+ Knight, SX, SX(O), and SX(O) Knight Edition. The 1.5-litre petrol engine of the Creta can be paired with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an IVT gearbox. Apart from that, there is a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which drives the front wheels via either a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox or a six-speed manual gearbox.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Since its facelift was introduced last year, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, an upscale hatchback, has been performing well in the market. The carmaker made significant improvements to the car's build quality and introduced several additional features as part of the overhaul. In June 2023, the company sold a total of 14,077 units of the Baleno. However, this represents a significant decrease compared to the 18,733 units sold in May 2023.

The Baleno hatchback, which offers contemporary features and a spacious interior, was originally launched by Maruti Suzuki in 2015 as part of their premium retail channel called Nexa.

Further, like the Swift, the Baleno is also driven by a 1.2-litre Dual-Jet petrol engine with the same power and torque figures. The engine is coupled to a CVT transmission.
