The venerable Italian supercar brand takes the plunge and ushers in a new era with the Sián, Lamborghini's first-ever hybrid supercar; ultra-exclusive as only 63 units will ever be produced, which, by the way, are already sold!

Lamborghini has unveiled the Sián days before its global debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. Well, what makes this one worthwhile is the fact that it is the first hybrid supercar to roll out of Sant'Agata Bolognese. And it's not just a run-of-the-mill hybrid, for Lamborghini has taken its time to ensure it features some important technological breakthroughs.

The basic ingredients, however, are more or less the same. The signature, naturally-aspirated V12 works in tandem with a 48V electric motor. But the V12's standalone power output has been tuned up to 774bhp, the highest-ever in Lamborghini's history. The electric motor though only produces about 34bhp & is placed in the gearbox to provide an immediate response. Together, the hybrid powertrain has a rated power output of 808bhp! This means the Sián can clock 100km/h in less than 2.8 seconds, to reach a top speed in excess of 350km/h.

What differentiates the Sián from the rest of the hybrid supercar crop is the fact that it makes use of a Supercapacitor, instead of a conventional Li-ion battery pack. Lamborghini claims the Supercapacitor application came into existence with the Aventador but it has been majorly worked upon for proper use in the Sián. The recent developments have ensured that the Supercapacitor can store ten times more power. Further, it's three times more powerful than a battery of equivalent weight & three times lighter than a battery with corresponding power levels. Plus, Lamborghini has cleverly placed it between the cockpit & the engine to ensure perfect weight distribution. The Supercapacitor & the e-motor combined tip the scales at just 34kg, which is significantly lesser than a battery-based hybrid system, which can weigh hundreds of kilograms.

Sharing his thoughts on the Sián's development, Stefano Domenicali, Chairman & CEO of Automobili Lamborghini said, 'The Sián is a masterpiece in possibilities. Not only does the Sián deliver a formidable hyper-car design and engineering tour de force today, but it also augments the potential for Lamborghini as a super sports car brand for tomorrow and for decades to come, even as hybridisation becomes more desirable and inevitably essential. The Lamborghini Sián represents the first step in Lamborghini’s route to electrification and expedites our next-generation V12 engine. Its Sián moniker, meaning ‘flash of lightning’ in Bolognese dialect, denotes the first electrification of a Lamborghini production car and confirms our strong connection to the territory in which we operate. With the Sián, Automobili Lamborghini demonstrates its dynastic strength as a legendary super sports car brand for the future.'

As mentioned before, all 63 units of the Lamborghini Sián are already sold. Each unit will be individually designed by the respective owner through Lamborghini Centro Stile.
