Tata’s much anticipated Tiago hatchback has finally gone on sale in the country. Prices start at Rs 3.20 lakh for the petrol base variant and rise up to Rs 5.54 lakh for the top-end diesel (ex-showroom, Delhi).

After unveiling the Tiago late in 2015 (it was named Zica back then), it’s taken Tata Motors quite a while to launch the car. However, the homegrown manufacturer has apparently ensured that all bases are covered thoroughly by its new offering. The Tiago replaces the aging Indica from the company’s line-up, but unlike the latter, it will be aimed towards private car buyers than commercial fleet operators. And as a result, Tata designers have done everything possible to shed the ‘taxi’ image from the Tiago.

On the outside, the Tiago comes across as a fresh and modern looking hatchback with neat and taut lines. It’s definitely one of the smart looking small cars in the market. Inside, it’s even better. The interior design and layout is completely new. Highlights include a dual tone layout incorporating lighter grey shade in the lower section of the dashboard and door pads. The steering wheel is lifted from the Bolt/Zest and comes with silver finish on the spokes and audio controls for telephony/infotainment system. It also gets a Harman infotainment system with eight speakers along with Juke-Car and turn-by-turn navigation apps that work in conjunction with a smartphone.

Powertrain options on the Tiago include two brand new engines - a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol and a 1.05-litre, 3-cylinder diesel. The petrol engine develops 83bhp @ 6,000rpm and 114Nm @ 3,500rpm. The diesel mill is capable of producing 69bhp @ 4,000rpm and a peak torque of 140Nm is available between 1,800 rpm and 3,000rpm. Both the engines come paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. ARAI fuel economy figures for petrol and diesel versions are 23.8km/l and 27.2km/l, respectively.

The Tiago has been launched with 5 variants on offer, namely – XB, XE, XM, XT and XZ, in both petrol and diesel. ABS with EBD and dual front airbags are standard on the XZ and optional on the XE, XM and XT.
