Let’s go back in time – 2013, to be precise. It was the year when the Ford EcoSport made its market debut in India. The rest, as they say, is history. The EcoSport was a runaway success, but more importantly, it was a trendsetter, for it was the product that kickstarted the sub-4m compact SUV frenzy in the country. Interestingly, though, at the time of its arrival, the EcoSport was tasked to do one more very important thing for the masses. And that was to democratize small turbo-petrol engines.

Dubbed the EcoBoost, Ford’s 1.0-litre three-cylinder direct-injection turbo petrol wonder made it to our shores via the EcoSport. I vividly remember reading all the rave reviews it got from critics and enthusiasts at that time. The jobless me back then was so sold on it that I convinced my brother-in-law to put down his hard-earned money on the EcoBoost version instead of the diesel, which he originally planned to buy. However, 10 years later, I can safely tell you – on his behalf – that the ownership experience hasn’t been the same as was advertised to him back then.

As controversial as it may sound, small turbo petrol engines aren’t as good as they are cracked up to be. On paper, they promise to bring the best of all worlds – fuel efficiency, low emissions, and sprightly performance – but in the real world, all they get you is a lot of turbo lag, a spikey/narrow power band, and poor fuel efficiency as compared to their NA counterparts. And because of this very nature, I don’t think they are suited for our driving conditions.

What’s more, a turbo petrol engine commands a hefty premium over their naturally aspirated counterparts – which is another reason why they aren’t particularly popular among the masses. A case in point is the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/hyundai/creta/">Hyundai Creta</a>. Hyundai discontinued the 1.4 turbo-petrol versions of its best-selling SUV earlier this year, but this hasn’t affected its sales figures. The Creta is still flying off the shelves, clocking over 14,000 units in monthly sales. Sure, a big chunk of it comes from the diesel version, but it seems that nobody gives two hoots about the missing turbocharger in the petrol Creta and are happily lapping up the less powerful, but more affordable, naturally breathing version. I reckon it’s a similar story with its Kia brethren, the Seltos. Unlike the Creta, it is now available with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, but I have a hunch that it’s the NA version that brings more volumes. Go to your nearest <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/kia/">Kia</a> dealer and see what version/engine option is available for a test drive – I can bet it’s going to be the 1.5-NA version.

There’s more proof. In segments/vehicles where there’s an option to choose between a turbo and NA motor, it’s still the latter that leads the numbers game by a fat margin. Take the Maruti Suzuki Fronx for example. It was launched with much fanfare with a 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine a few months ago but, reportedly, the three-pot turbo accounts for less than 15% of its monthly sales! It’s the tried-and-tested and more affordable 1.2-NA engine that’s selling in way more numbers.

The bottom line is this – as much as carmakers want us to believe, turbo-petrols haven’t really led the way as promised. Sure, the difference in performance is amazing when you’re seeking outright thrills but in daily driving conditions, it’s a bit of a hit-and-miss affair. When you are “off-boost”, you get no performance but good fuel efficiency, and when you’re “on-boost” you get spectacular performance as the turbo pumps more air into the cylinders, albeit it also sucks in a lot more fuel, which is bad news for your pocket. All in all, there seems to be no middle ground or right balance when you’re driving a small turbo petrol-powered vehicle.

The other question mark over turbo petrols is their long-term reliability. With a complex architecture and highly stressed components, repairing a turbo engine is a tricky and costly affair, too. For instance, the EcoSport I spoke about earlier had a full engine change – not overhaul, but replacement – because it overheated during a road trip, thanks to a leaky radiator hose. The car was towed to the nearest Ford service centre, and after two months of inspection – without even opening the cylinder head – they concluded that the EcoBoost engine is too complex for them to fix, so there’s no other option but to replace it.

This was followed by a cool Rs 4 lakh invoice (40% of the car’s actual price in 2013), but, thankfully, Ford gave the owner some breather with a ‘goodwill’ discount. Still, he ended up paying around 1.5 lakh to get the car back on the road. From what I know, the car’s running fine as of now, but I have a feeling that he still curses me, every time he gets behind the wheel. Fair to say, I don’t think I can vouch for a small turbo petrol motor ever again.

Opinion: Are Small Turbo Petrol Engines Really That Popular?

Small turbo petrol engines are all the rage these days, from mainstream hatchbacks to compact-SUVs, they propel virtually all the new models. But are they as good as they are cracked up to be?

The Ford Ecosport is set to get yet another life cycle update. The changes are largely expected to be cosmetic, while most mechanicals and features are likely to remain the same as before.

Recently, Ford introduced the SE variant of the Ecosport in the Indian market,&nbsp;which sported a redesigned tail section. And now, the company is working on a facelift version of the Ecosport. The spy pictures of the updated model confirm that the new Ecosport has almost reached the production form.

The mid-life update includes a redesigned grille and a chunkier bumper at the front. The LED DRLs have been repositioned to the fog lamp surrounds. The exterior bits are largely the same, but the alloy wheels sport a new design. Also, Ford India will continue to offer a spare wheel&nbsp;with the facelift model, unlike the Ford Ecosport SE, which misses out on a spare wheel. The cabin is largely expected to be the same as the outgoing Ford Ecosport.

The mechanicals will be carried over as well, and the engine and transmission options will remain unchanged. Currently, the Ford Ecosport is offered with two engine options&nbsp;– a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol unit and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. Both engines will be paired with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, but the petrol motor will also get an option of a six-speed torque converter automatic.

The pricing will see a nominal hike of Rs 10,000 (approximately) across variants. The price of the Ford Ecosport currently ranges between Rs 8.19 and 11.19 lakh (ex-showroom). The compact crossover SUV rivals the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and Mahindra Bolero Neo. The launch of the facelifted Ford Ecosport is expected to happen around the festive season.

Ford Ecosport facelift in the works

The Ford Ecosport is set to get yet another life cycle update. The changes are largely expected to be skin deep with most mechanicals and features to be the same as before. Read the following to find out.

The Ford EcoSport SE brings the styling of the international-spec model to India by losing the rear-mounted spare wheel.

There were reports that Ford India is planning to launch a non-spare wheel version of the EcoSport&nbsp;– a version that does not feature the rear-mounted spare wheel.&nbsp;Those reports have been confirmed today, as the rumoured version has been launched as the EcoSport SE, with prices starting from&nbsp;₹10.49 lakh for the petrol variant and&nbsp;₹10.99 lakh for the diesel (all figures ex-showroom). At this price, the EcoSport SE trim sits just below the top-spec S trim and, in terms of feature offerings, is based on the Titanium trim we're familiar with.

It's worth mentioning that the EcoSport SE does not have a relocated spare wheel – it does not offer one. Instead, the&nbsp;EcoSport SE comes with a puncture repair kit as standard. This is in accordance with <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/morth-notifies-new-regulations-for-spare-wheel-and-safety-glass-in-passenger-vehicles-108167/">the MoRTH notification, which was released in July last year</a>. Apart from the restyled tailgate, the EcoSport SE also gets a restyled two-tone&nbsp;rear bumper, with a silver faux-diffuser insert. The tailgate still opens the same way as that of the other variants.

The SE variants of the EcoSport are powered by the same 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol (120bhp &amp;&nbsp;149Nm) and 1.5-litre turbo diesel (99bhp &amp;&nbsp;215Nm) engines as the rest of the line-up, however, there's only a five-speed manual gearbox on offer on both SE variants.

Feature-wise, the EcoSport SE comes loaded with Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system (with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility), FordPass&nbsp;connectivity app integration, a sunroof, dual front, side &amp; curtain airbags, cruise control,&nbsp;auto HID headlamps, etc. as standard. The remaining features are shared with the Titanium trim.&nbsp;

New Ford EcoSport SE variants launched starting ₹10.49 lakh

The Ford EcoSport SE brings the styling of the international-spec model to India by losing the iconic rear-mounted spare wheel – launched with prices starting from ₹10.49 lakh for the petrol variant and ₹10.99 lakh for the diesel (all figures ex-showroom).

Ford India has revised the prices of the EcoSport for 2021. Along with the price cut on most variants, the Titanium trim now comes fitted with a sunroof as a standard feature.&nbsp;

Ford India has updated the prices of the EcoSport for 2021, giving the entire range a significant&nbsp;price cut. It has become&nbsp;more affordable&nbsp;by up to Rs 39,000. Along with the updates, the company has also axed some variants from the EcoSport range.

The EcoSport range now starts at Rs 7.99 lakh for the petrol base Ambiente MT variant – which means a price cut of Rs 20,000. Similarly, the Trend MT petrol variant is now more affordable by Rs 35,000, as it’s priced at Rs 8.64 lakh. The Titanium MT petrol has gotten dearer by Rs 1,000, as it's now priced at Rs 9.79 lakh. However, the Titanium variants (both petrol and diesel) are&nbsp;now fitted with a sunroof, so that’s not really a deal-breaker. Titanium + MT, Titanium AT, and Thunder Edition MT aren’t available in petrol engine option now. The Sports MT version is priced at Rs 10.99 lakh, which means a cut of Rs 24,000. The top-end Titanium + AT has received the maximum price cut of Rs 39,000, as it’s now priced at Rs 11.19 lakh.&nbsp;

The diesel variants have also received a similar&nbsp;price cut, except the Ambiente MT (Rs 8.69 lakh) and Titanium MT (Rs 9.99 lakh). The Trend MT variant is now priced at Rs 9.14 lakh – Rs 35,000 less than earlier. Like the petrol version, Titanium + MT and Thunder Edition MT have been discontinued for diesel version as well. The range-topping Sports MT is now priced at Rs 11.49 lakh, making it more affordable by Rs 24,000. The diesel variants aren’t available with an automatic gearbox.

Although Titanium + is not available at the moment, Ford has confirmed that it'll be back with an 'exciting update' soon.&nbsp;

The petrol version of the EcoSport is available with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, which develops 120bhp and 149Nm of torque. It’s available with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. The diesel version is offered with a 1.5-litre turbo engine, which is rated at 99bhp and produces 215Nm of torque. It’s offered with a 5-speed manual transmission.

The Ford EcoSport competes with the likes of Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, and Nissan Magnite.

Ford has made the EcoSport petrol automatic more affordable by launching the mid-spec Titanium automatic variant. It continues to be powered by the same 1.5-litre petrol engine and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox as the top-end Titanium+ AT. 

Ford kick-started the BS6 innings of its popular EcoSport compact SUV way back in January of 2020. And now in a bit to expand its prospects, Ford India has introduced a more affordable petrol automatic variant of the car. Priced at Rs 10.66 lakh, the new Ford EcoSport Titanium petrol automatic is more affordable than the earlier sole petrol automatic Ford EcoSport by Rs 90,000. As a result, the Ford EcoSport automatic is now available in two variants&nbsp;– Titanium and Titanium+. Now, considering the high price points of diesel automatic models, it is unlikely that we will see a diesel AT version of the Ford EcoSport. Also, because of the fact that owing to the current COVID19 situation and the higher&nbsp;taxes on diesel&nbsp;have caused&nbsp;demand for compact diesel cars to drop.

Coming back to the new EcoSport petrol automatic, the compact SUV’s powertrain remains the same as that of the top-end Titanium+ variant with its 120bhp, 1.5-litre petrol engine being mated to a new six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. And like the EcoSport Titanium+ automatic, the Titanium AT too gets paddle shifters for manual gearshifts. The automatic gearbox brings with it safety features such as traction control, stability control, and hill hold. The Titanium variant misses out on a few features from the higher-spec Titanium+ variant, such as automatic headlamps and wipers, side airbags, electric sunroof, and illuminated glovebox.

Ford India is all set to bring in connected car features as standard across its model range, which will make them the only carmaker in India to do so. &nbsp;

Ford India may be on the back foot at the moment, that is until the JV with Mahindra begins to get off the ground, but they aren’t exactly standing back and watching the show either. For their latest initiative is all set to offer the full range Ford cars in India with a range of connected car features. In what definitely is a big announcement, Ford India has communicated that the company will be bringing in its BS6 range of cars with in-built 4G SIM cards that will be offered as standard across all variants of their models. Ford India has also stated that the company will bear the cost of connection for the first three years of a vehicle’s life span.

Ford India is calling its connected car tech – FordPass. Ford vehicle owners can download the mobile phone application on their smartphones and connect to their cars by creating an ID and entering identification data with a two-factor authentication process. Primary account holders can grant&nbsp;secondary access to other users of the vehicle and they can also list multiple Ford connected cars to the same ID.

The FordPass app is divided into three sections, namely, Move, Find and Guides. The Move section is the one with connected car tech and offers functional features for the car. This will allow vehicle owners to remotely unlock the car as well&nbsp;turn the engine on and off, they can also check the health of the car, the fuel level, engine oil level, odometer reading. The vehicle's location can also be checked and spare part prices can be looked up too. Full vehicle service and maintenance history will also be available in this section along with service reminders. This section also has a how-to-videos category that can show users the full range of FordPass features.

The ‘Find’ section helps users locate nearby fuel pumps and points of interest alongside finding Ford dealerships.

The ‘Guides’ section is a virtual help desk that can help customers who need assistance with their commute, regardless of their location.

All BS6 Ford cars to get connectivity features as standard

With the BS-VI update, it's the end of the road for the EcoSport's earlier&nbsp;1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol unit.

Ford has officially entered the arena of BS-VI vehicles in the country by launching the updated version of its compact SUV - the EcoSport. Prices for the 2020 EcoSport start from&nbsp;₹8.04 lakh for the entry-level petrol variant (Ambiente MT) and&nbsp;₹8.54 lakh for the entry-level diesel variant - Ambiente MT (ex-showroom, Delhi).&nbsp;In both cases, that's an increase of about&nbsp;₹13,000 over&nbsp;the BS-IV car's&nbsp;prices. Ford is also offering a 3-Year/1,00,000km warranty on the BS-VI EcoSport.

With the BS-VI update, the EcoSport line-up has ditched the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. This means the car is available only with two engine options now - the 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol (120bhp, 149Nm torque) &amp; the 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel (99bhp, 215Nm torque). The transmission options remain unchanged - the petrol engine is available with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, while the diesel engine only gets the 5-speed manual option.

In terms of features &amp; equipment though, the BS-VI EcoSport does not offer any changes. Like before, the higher variants come equipped with Ford's&nbsp;SYNC 3 infotainment system (with an 8-inch touchscreen) or a 9.0-inch multimedia system in lower variants. The list of features also includes up to 6 airbags, auto HID headlamps (with DRLs), push-button stop/start, etc.

Ever since Ford announced their joint venture with Mahindra in October 2019, the news has been hogging the limelight, at least when it comes to the Blue Oval in India. Well, it's 2020, and it’s time to turn to a new chapter. So, here&nbsp;we reveal the leaked images of the next-generation Ford EcoSport from Brazil. The SUV is expected to make its debut in the Brazilian market in 2021.

The EcoSport was launched in 2013 in India and created the sub-4 metre SUV segment here. The images of the all-new EcoSport reveals a drastic change in design. The compact SUV doesn’t come across as compact as the current one. It makes quite a sweeping statement with more curves-like crossover design and has fewer edges, unlike the current EcoSport, which is more rugged and butch. So, does this mean that Ford is eyeing the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta’s segment? At the moment, we can’t comment on this, but there certainly is a possibility.

Now, coming back to the new EcoSport, the first thing that grabs your attention is the typical in-your-face hexagonal front grille. With the double-barreled all-LED headlights, smart-looking LED daytime running lamps, muscular wheel arches, chrome finished fog lamps, and underbody cladding, this contemporary-looking SUV has quite a road presence.

From the side, there’s heavy black cladding that runs across the body from the wheel arches, below the doors all the way to the rear bumper. At a glance, you could mistake the new EcoSport for its elder sibling, the Kuga.

The EcoSport’s rear design will attract a lot of attention as it has a bit of a Land Rover and Tata Harrier's design layout, with a thick black band running between the new LED tail lamps with EcoSport inscribed on it. The new SUV also boasts the silver-painted faux skid plate.

Sadly, we can’t really talk about the interior, as these leaked images are only of the exterior&nbsp;of the EcoSport, but it is expected for the size of the SUV to increase, which should translate into a more spacious cabin. Apart from this, it is also expected to get a larger touchscreen infotainment system with Sync4. According to reports, in Brazil, the EcoSport will be powered by a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 135bhp.

The current generation EcoSport in India is available in three powertrains –&nbsp;123bhp 1-litre turbo petrol, 121bhp 1.5-litre petrol, and 99bhp 1.5-litre diesel, and we expect the three to continue to power the new EcoSport with tweaked outputs.

Here's what the all-new Ford EcoSport looks like

We explain what the 2021 Ford EcoSport is all about and what one should expect from it. The new SUV will be first launched in Brazil in 2021 and going by the leaked images, the EcoSport looks bigger and all grown up.

This special edition model is effectively a replacement to the Signature trim. It gets some additional cosmetic features, sportier interior trim and more equipment 

The sub-4 metre SUV segment is heating up. Just last week, Maruti Suzuki introduced a limited edition version of the Vitara Brezza, and now, Ford has introduced the Thunder Edition of the EcoSport. An effect of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/hyundai-venue-review-first-drive-106025/">Hyundai Venue</a> launch? Possibly! But it sure looks like the customer will reap great benefits of this skirmish.

Ford has now introduced a Thunder Edition of the EcoSport. Now this new variant is essentially the same as the Signature trim the company had on offer earlier. The EcoSport Thunder Edition is priced at Rs 10.18 lakh for the petrol trim and Rs 10.68 lakh for the diesel. Prices ex-showroom Delhi. &nbsp;

As far as the changes on this variant are concerned, you will be able to spot them on the outside and in the cabin too. It gets dark bezel for the headlamp cluster and fog lamps. The grille, front bumper, alloy wheels, roof as well as ORVMs get a black treatment too. On the inside, the cabin gets a different trim. The dashboard gets brown accents on the centre console, above the glove box, and on the door pads. The seats and the central armrest also gets a similar dual-tone black and brown treatment. In terms of features, the EcoSport Thunder Edition gets the works – from a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen, Ford’s SYNC 3 tech, navigation, voice command and more. At the heart, the Thunder Edition comes with 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol is good for 121bhp while the diesel makes 99bhp. This variant doesn’t get the 1.0-litre EcoBoost motor nor an automatic transmission option. 

Along with the launch of the Thunder Edition, Ford has also slashed the prices of other variants of the EcoSport. Here’s the revised price list:

2019 Ford EcoSport Thunder Edition launched

The Ford EcoSport Thunder Edition is effectively a replacement to the outgoing Signature Edition. It gets some additional cosmetic features, sportier interior trim and more equipment.

We put the new boy, the Hyundai Venue, up against its established rivals. Only this time, we take a look at what value each model offers for its asking price.

Well, with the recent launch of the Hyundai Venue in India, the number of compact SUV contenders has gone up to five. While you can <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/hyundai-venue-vs-ford-ecosport-vs-maruti-suzuki-brezza-vs-tata-nexon-vs-mahindra-xuv300-spec-comparison-105878/">compare the specifications of all the below-mentioned models here</a>, we thought it best to bring you a price comparison of all the five models as well, keeping in mind the aggressive pricing&nbsp;of the Venue despite its feature-loaded variant line-up. Here's a look...

Petrol Variants

As is the norm, the price range of&nbsp;the petrol variant line-up gives us an idea of the starting price of each model. Leaving aside the Brezza (which is not available with a petrol engine), the Venue poses some serious competition to the Nexon as they both have a similar starting price. The XUV300 and EcoSport, on the other hand, start at a much higher price with the difference crossing ₹ 1 lakh. So, Hyundai loyalists are definitely at an&nbsp;advantage here. However, the Venue features&nbsp;the least powerful petrol motor (in the base E and S variants), with only an 82bhp power output. The EcoSport, in comparison, offers 121bhp from its 1.5-litre petrol motor. In terms of the price&nbsp;though, the Venue offers good value at the higher end of the spectrum as well, and the top-spec petrol MT&nbsp;version gets the 118bhp 1.0-litre turbocharged unit, taking care&nbsp;of the power deficit.

Diesel Variants

In the diesel line-up, Venue's pricing is at par with that of the Nexon and the Brezza. But, to be specific, the Nexon trumps them all with the lowest starting price. At the higher end, the top-spec variant of the Venue is almost a lakh more expensive than the corresponding version the Brezza. However, for that extra money, Hyundai&nbsp;is definitely offering quite a lot of&nbsp;segment-first features like Hill-Assist Control, cornering lamps, wireless charging, a cabin air purifier, HD infotainment screen, an Arkamys sound&nbsp;system&nbsp;and projector fog lamps. These features are offered over and above the usual stuff like an electric sunroof (missing in the Brezza), cruise control, rear parking assist, ABS with EBD, 6 airbags, push-button start-stop, etc. Plus, the Venue also offers the Hyundai Bluelink connectivity suite which,&nbsp;in its entirety, is a segment-first feature.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Automatic Variants

This&nbsp;is where things get more interesting. While the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/mahindra-xuv300-review-first-drive-105432/">Mahindra XUV300</a> does not offer an automatic option as of now, the Nexon offers the cheapest automatic option out of the remaining four. Meanwhile, the Venue and the EcoSport might suffer a bit as there&nbsp;is&nbsp;no diesel automatic option on offer. This means the Brezza and the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/tata-nexon-review-first-drive/">Tata Nexon</a> are the only&nbsp;models here which offer a diesel automatic option. Coming to the type of automatic gearboxes on offer, the Nexon and Brezza both offer AMTs. The EcoSport, on the other hand, offers a torque converter setup. The <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/hyundai-venue-review-first-drive-106025/">Hyundai Venue</a> is the only model here which offers a seven-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT), another segment-first feature. In terms of driving dynamics, performance and smoothness, AMTs fall at the lower end while the DCT by far offers the most advanced setup here, even in terms of tech.
