Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Editorial Review
The Alto 800 is now in its second generation, with the current model being unveiled in 2012. The new car has been much improved over the car it replaces in almost every aspect. The interiors are better, more spacious and the overall design was modernized. In 2016, a facelift was given to the Maruti Alto 800, giving it a new bumper design and a few new other cosmetic changes like new colour trims and updated interior upholstery. The Maruti Alto 800 has been leading the sales charts since quite a while now and is the undisputed king of the sub-compact hatchback segment.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is available in four variants: Standard, LX, LXi and VXi. Maruti recently has also introduced optional (O) safety variants which have a driver’s airbag across all versions. The top-of-the line VXi version of the Alto 800 offers many convenience features like power windows, internally adjustable rear view mirror, power steering, body-toned bumpers and an optional CNG kit.
The F8D engine which powers the Alto 800 is an 796cc engine which produces 47bhp of power. The Alto 800 is not made to be the most powerful car of its class. Instead, the focus is on fuel efficiency, and it is a place where this hatchback fares pretty well. The petrol version of the Alto 800 delivers an ARAI certified mileage of 24.7km/l, while the CNG version gives 33.44km/kg.
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Exterior Review
The Alto 800 is nowhere as flamboyantly styled as some of the new entries in the sub-compact segment. Cars like the Renault Kwid and Datsun Redi-Go look far more upmarket than Maruti’s offering. The car is styled conservatively to appeal to one and all. The Alto 800 has a ground clearance of 160mm.
No version of the car comes equipped with alloy wheels. The tyres which come fitted to the Alto 800 are 145/80 section R12s. The lower versions of the car do not have a passenger side ORVM.
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Interior Review
The safe design theme of the Alto 800 is very well reflected in its interior too. The second-generation Alto has much better cabin than the previous gen car, with the added exterior dimensions making the interior more spacious. The dashboard design is pretty simplistic and the plastic quality used in the cabin is average. All but the base Standard version of the Alto 800 come equipped with air-conditioning. The VXi version comes with a 12V power socket and a single-din music system.
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Engine Specifications and performance Review
The only available engine option on the Alto 800 is the 796cc F8D 3-cylinder petrol engine. This engine produces around 47bhp of power and 69Nm of torque. These figures are not class-leading but the Alto 800 performs absolutely fine in the city, with the engine proving decent grunt. Out on the highway, the engine would run out of breadth at triple digit speeds. A 5-speed manual is standard across the Maruti Alto 800 range. The more capable 999cc K-Series engine is available in the more expensive Alto K10.
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Mileage Review
The ARAI claimed fuel economy figures for the Maruti Alto 800 are 24.7km/l (petrol) and 33.44km/kg(CNG)
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Ride and Handling Review
The McPherson struts up front and coil springs at the rear give the Maruti Alto 800 a decent ride and handling set up. Being a small car, it is not made to do triple digit highway speeds and can get unstable, but in general the suspension works well.
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Engine & Gearbox
The Alto 800 has a 3-cylinder, 796cc petrol motor producing 47bhp and 69Nm of torque, all mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
