You see, the M5 has always been able to combine ultra-high performance with everyday usability, along with more than a smattering of luxury. The hybrid tech in this generation, though, has meant that the M5 has gained more than half-a-tonne in weight over its predecessor – tipping the scales at a substantial 2,435kg. That certainly hasn’t blunted its straight-line speed though. After all, the wallop of those 717 horses means that it achieves 100km/h in a scant 3.5 seconds. The trouble comes when you attempt to hurl those two-and-a-half tonnes around the short loop of the BIC. Despite the four-wheel drive, the M5 appears reluctant to pivot around its axis and put its power down unless its pointed dead straight. There’s a very apparent resistance mid-corner owing to its mass, which can be seen in its lap time. That’s not to say it’s not entertaining. You can turn off the all-wheel drive and simply smoke the rear tires in two-wheel drive mode, as you see here. As a road car, and a stupendously fast luxury car, the M5 still fits the bill but its weight means it’s not quite the precision instrument of old. In this avatar, it’s more of a hammer. It looks imposing, and it goes like stink but it can’t hide the weight of that 18.6 kWh battery pack. Perhaps BMW should have taken a page out of the Porsche GTS playbook, which has a 1.9 kWh battery that keeps the turbos always on boost – that way it enhances performance without any penalty in weight. With 204bhp and 250Nm, its performance is brisk and progressive rather than explosive. It’s quick, but it won’t overwhelm you.

Ultimately, the iX1 LWB understands its mission perfectly. It’s a family vehicle first – spacious and feature-rich, carrying that all-important blue-and-white roundel at an almost unbelievable price. It may not be the ultimate driving machine, but it’s a genuinely well-rounded, premium-value offering, which blends everyday usability with that essential spark of BMW fun.

BMW iX1 LWB at autoX Awards: Best Cars of 2025 Ranked

Where the BMW iX1 LWB truly surprised the jury was on the track. The FWD setup makes it feel agile, direct, and confident – more like a lively hatchback than a heavy SUV.

The BMW X3 was one of the four BMWs that we tested during this year’s autoX track day. A new-generation model, the X3 has a lot going for it, all of which became quite apparent during the few laps that we did in it at BIC. It’s big and looks dashingly good, with the illuminated kidney grille attracting a lot of attention – of the right kind. The X3 has now become a touch more comfortable than before, owing to its tubeless tyres and reworked suspension, and it’s nice to drive on the track, too. The view from behind the steering wheel is expansive and commanding, and for the most part, the new X3 is quite fun. While it’s not a track weapon, it doesn’t feel out of its depth when you decide to chase apexes and floor the throttle. It offers decent grip levels, but, given the increased footprint, the bulk of the SUV becomes conspicuously noticeable when you’re hugging corners and kissing the kerb. The steering feels precise and communicative, and the brakes do a good job of shedding speed.

The X3 comes with two engine options – a 2.0-litre turbo petrol and a 2.0-litre turbo diesel. The petrol unit churns out 190bhp and 310Nm, while the diesel engine makes 197bhp and 400Nm. Both units are paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and BMW’s AWD system. The diesel engine offers an efficiency figure of 17.6km/l – quite impressive for its class. It also does the 0 – 100km/h in 7.4 seconds, which is 1.25 seconds quicker than the last-gen model – a notable improvement.

The interior is refined and modern, with a stylish dashboard and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. The near-total absence of physical buttons means that most functions are accessed through the touchscreen – not ideal but manageable. The new X3 comes with radar and camera-assisted safety features, including adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist, among others. The new-gen X3 may not be a giant leap for the Bavarian manufacturer, but it’s a lot more than a small step forward.

As the most affordable entry into the world of BMWs in India, the 2 Series Gran Coupe has a tough and crucial job – to hook young executives to the brand. With this new iteration, BMW has made a clear strategic move, prioritising head-turning styling, a tech-laden cabin, and everyday comfort over the pure driving pleasure that once defined even its entry-level cars. This shift is evident in the jury scores, where the 2 Series scored a modest 3/5 for its drivetrain and an even lower 2.5/5 for space and practicality.

The biggest talking point of the 2 Series Gran Coupe – and the reason behind that low drivetrain score – is the new 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine. That said, a BMW is more than just its engine. When it comes to dynamics, it handles well, feels agile, and offers good feedback. On the track, that strength became quite evident. It posted a respectable lap time of 1:10.9, proving that its chassis is still a gem. Ultimately, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is a mixed bag. It’s no longer trying to please purists on a budget. The cabin, while modern, reveals some glaring cost cuts – a manually adjustable steering wheel, for instance – and the cramped rear seats do little for comfort, justifying its low practicality score. Yet, with its sharp shark-nose design, high-tech features, and a solid 11/20 X-Factor score, it does exactly what it’s built for. It’s a stylish, comfortable (for two), and genuinely enjoyable commuter that deserves to wear the BMW badge, even if it has lost some of the brand’s old magic in the process.

The F 900 GS Adventure, a middleweight by designation, seems to have inherited the very soul of the old R 1250 GS.But this isn’t a straightforward comparison of which bike is better. It’s an exploration of two philosophies wearing the same iconic badge. And the only way to do it was to take both machines off-road and push them to their limits. <h2>Boxer Punch vs. Parallel Prowess</h2>

At the heart of these two machines lie two very different personalities. The R 1300 GS comes with an all-new 1300cc ShiftCam boxer engine – a powerhouse producing 145bhp and 149Nm of torque. The best way to describe its power delivery is as a force of nature – a gut-punch of acceleration that demands you keep up. In contrast, the F 900 GS Adventure’s 895cc parallel-twin feels far more playful. With 103bhp and 93Nm on tap, its power delivery is linear and exploitable – even if you stay in the same gear, you feel you can get more out of it.

The 1300 is an effortlessly potent continent-crosser. You can engage top gear and ride it all day. The 900, with its 270-degree crank, feels more engaging and visceral; it’s an engine that begs you to wring its neck and keep it in the power band, especially on open trails. In terms of refinement, it’s a trade-off. The 1300’s boxer is smoother at high RPMs, but you feel its characteristic vibrations at a standstill. The 900, on the other hand, is calmer at idle but sends a few tingles through the mirrors and bars when cruising.

 And for those who crave a bit of drama, the 900’s stock exhaust note is surprisingly more characterful, with pops and bangs on the overrun that the more clinical 1300, even with its factory Akrapovič option, can’t match.
